Jan 2012 update
Jan 7, 2012

I'm tempted to write: "It's been a quite year in Lake Wobegon, my hometown.", with apologies to Garrison Kiellor. But actually, the year has not been exactly quiet, and has in fact been quite challenging in many ways not related to music. As a result, there have been few shows and no apparent musical activity.

But there have been undercurrents flowing. Songwriting—which to me is always a pure joy—has come in juicy spurts. And, I've continued to work and play in my home studio on the recordings for my next release, and that has been lovely and fruitful.

I'm about to embark on a week of rest, rejuvenation, and writing at my favorite retreat-away place in the heart of the Cascades.

The new year promises to be good one, at least that's how it feels to me. I'm wishing you all a happy and fulfilling 2012!

"A Thousand Shining Pieces" is released
Sep 19, 2009

James' 1st album is out. Produced by Keith Greeninger with a cast of musicians from the greater San Francisco area. This recording features 13 original songs in a warm, contemporary folk style. Heart centered, heliotropic, and organic. Sometimes Beatlesque and in spots Paul Simonish, with an occasional jazz tilt or latin rhythm, it features catchy melodies with heartfelt lyrics that speak of loss, longing, rebirth, reunion, lightness.

"James May is an artist worthy of attention, spotlight, and praise...amazing."

— Cyrus Rhodes
president - Indie Music Digest

“The first thing I noticed about James’ songs is the stunning beauty of his melodies and chord movement. The more I listened, the more I came to appreciate the depth and vulnerability of his lyrics as well. James writes and sings with a rare and powerful sensitivity."

— Steve Meckfessel singer/songwriter www.stevemeckfessel.com

"Passionate songwriting steeped in light, love, loss and resolution. Lovely music."

— Laurie DesJardins - KVMR radio broadcaster www.kvmr.org

"James May’s songs weave their way into the heart, the bones, and the soul. The combination of potent lyric fused with rich melody is strong medicine from an artist who, with open arms, faces both the joy and the strife of our human journey with equal passion."
